Geodesic Ornament Tutorial
ByI have received many emails recently requesting the instructions for the Ornaments I posted on November 13th. For today I am going to share instructions to make the Geodesic Ornaments shown below:
I originally found instructions on the HGTV website, but have adapted them slightly. The ornament is made up of 20 circles, folded to form a triangle. The side flaps of the circles are then glued together.
Supplies:
- One piece 12×12 Designer Series Paper
- small piece of scrap cardstock to make template
- 1 3/8″ circle punch (Any punch 1″ or larger works)
- Straight Edge/ Ruler
- SU! Cutter Kit or other scoring tool
- Anywhere Glue Stick
- 16″ Ribbon
Create Scoring Template:
Using scrap card stock, punch a 1 3/8″ circle ( or the same size as the ones you will be using to construct your ornament). Fold this circle in half, then again in thirds. Unfold the circle and place back into the hole the circle was punched from. Make a mark around the outside edge of every other crease.
You should have three marks. This is your template for scoring the 20 circles.
How to form the Triangle:
Using the 1 3/8″ circle punch, punch 20 holes out of your Designer Series Paper. Using your straight edge and cutter kit score each circle, connecting the marks in the template you made to create a triangle within the circle.
You will need 10 triangles with one side of the paper facing out, and 10 of the other side facing out as seen below. Fold on the score lines.
Ornament Construction:
You will need 5 triangles for the top, 5 for the bottom, and 10 for the middle section.
For the top and bottom sections, two side flaps of 5 triangles are glued to each other. Leave the last two side flaps unglued until the ribbon hanger is in place. For the middle section, 10 triangles are glued together to form a straight line.
Before Gluing the three sections of your ornament together, take your 16″ piece of ribbon and tie a slip knot approximately 1″ in from ends.
Slide the bottom section of your ornament onto the ribbon hanger, just above the knot. Glue the remaining two side flaps together to complete the bottom of your ornament.
Take the middle section and glue the end flaps together to form a circle. Now you will glue the bottom flaps of your middle section to the top flaps of your bottom section. Now glue your top section to the middle section and you are done!
I hope you have enjoyed my very first tutorial. Let me know what you think by posting a comment below this post.

When I was a child, we made these ornaments in our Girl Scout troop. We recycled Christmas cards and cut out various scenes so each project was unique and colorful. We gave the finished ornament the name “Joy Ball” and gave them to our parents as a gift. I’m glad I could find the instructions to recreate this project with this season’s cards. Thank you!
